The winter of 2015, an epiphany hit lead singer Seth Cocquit, of Harvest Sons, that would change the direction of his music and life, fooorrreeever.
The epiphany was the result of deep soul searching and realizing life is a short game we get to play.
Seth cut his teeth in the 7 member punk-grass outfit, Frank F. Sidney’s Western Bandit Volunteers, spending 5 years on fiddle in the corner of Midwest dive bars, festivals, farm parties and druuuuunkass campfires.
The first one to come to Seth’s aid was hometown friend and bass master Andy Greiner. They played their first gig at a St. Jude fundraiser in the corner of Pour House Taproom where future member Nik Grafelman was perched on a barstool. Hearing the other two playing Avett Bros. and Old Crow songs,
Nik goes, “I like what you boys played there” (paraphrasing) and the rest was HOT DAMN history.
Nik would eventually introduce the band to his childhood friend, and longtime drummer Nathan Glaser. Nathan, a Galva, Illinois native who had recently moved back home from Phoenix, AZ where he had been playing in a Social Distortion cover band, had developed an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars action figures and Metallica, and found himself 1) sleeping on his old race car bed, and 2) actually enjoying folk-rock music.
Juggling day jerbs and figuring out 4 different schedules of guys who had, like, 5 DIFFERENT projects simultaneously, eventually lead to Harvest Sons getting their shit together and putting something on a record in hopes of chasing the ultimate dream - filling 50 capacity rooms, every night, for the rest of their God given lives.
After 2 years of playing regional shows, wondering if Harvest Sons is a good or bad idea, and letting Harvest Sons find its sound, we are now poised to put out out Flat Black Live Sessions Vol. 1 in September, with Volume 2 to follow soon after. Where it goes from there is anybody’s guess. Seeing this great big world from the vicinity of a 12 passenger van while almost wanting to kill each other sounds like the next logical step. Of course, nothing about music IS logical or guaranteed.
Influenced by heroes Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, John Prine, Neil Young, Willie Nelson , Steve Earle, Jason Isbell, Old Crow Medicine Show, Sturgill Simpson and countless other authentically-rich ass musicians, Harvest Sons will have plenty of great music to listen to on their journey.
