Reggae On The Grass celebrates the thriving reggae community in Colorado.The Inaugural 2018 staging was the largest free concert series production at the Levitt Pavilion for Denver's 50 family friendly concert series, at 6200 attendees.Presented by BloodPreshah/Rasta Stevie & KGNU Community Radio, ROTG features the best Colorado based Reggae bands, DJ's , and singers. New for 2019 , Reggae On The Grass is adding International Reggae All-Stars.With a stated mission to unify, promote, and uplift the entire Colorado reggae movement, ROTG showcases Radio, as well as night club selectors alongside artistes and performers. Advocating for the Jamaican Sound System culture. ROTG also features a Reggae Market (Marketplace) a colorful array of Reggae related merchandise, arts, crafts, and services. Drawing inspiration from Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Beatles, John Holt, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Black Uhuru and Steel Pulse, the group soon cemented a wholesome fusion of Roots Reggae, Souls and Rock genres for a fresh but universal sound. Much like the iconic reggae outfit The Wailers, the band chose its name, EarthKry, to signify its mission to voice the grievances of the downtrodden through the vibrations of their Legacy music. Since 2013 the band has spent much of their time creating music with other notable artistes in recording sessions while further developing their signature sound. Through the guidance of veteran drummer/ lecturer Derrick Stewart, veteran trumpeter Nambo Robinson, guitarist/former tutor Maurice Gordon and producers Stephen Stewart and Sam Clayton, the band has since released a successful debut EP “Hard Road”, an acclaimed, worldwide top charting debut album “SURVIVAL” and have toured extensively on some of the biggest international stages.Legendary Jamaican MALLORY WILLIAMSMallory williams wrote many songs which became verry popular in Jamaica and other parts of the Globe. In his 1986 song She Boom, Mallory Williams sings about a woman called 'Poochie Lou', whose dancing sets the Rae Town Sunday night oldies session alight, so much so that "dem tun off de soun' fi she sekkle down/Coulden sekkle down she come fi mash up de town". However, in the writing of She Boom, there was a woman whose name is not mentioned in the song. And his connection to that woman, Sophia George, came about because of her hit, Girlie Girlie. The late Tony Laing directed the video for She Boom, centred around the Capricorn Inn, during a Sunday night session when as Williams sings, "Klassique in town, good vibes jus' a flow". After Williams did the song Reggae Gone Grammy, he had looked up Laing. The musical connection was from another generation as their fathers had played in the same band. Williams told The Sunday Gleaner that he played keyboards on Girlie Girlie and was in the band that went with George to perform in England, as well as Holland, Spain, and other European countries. Son of the famous Jamaican pianist and band leader, Luther Williams, cousin to model/singer/actress, the inimitable Grace Jones, Mallory developed as a self-taught musician playing the piano at every available opportunity. In 1976 he made his debut with the Tony DaCosta Band as a keyboard player. It was sheer coincidence that on this occasion he worked at the Hilton, previously known as the Arawak, the same hotel where his father spent most of his residency and subsequently composed his hit tune Arawak-Cha-Cha at that time. Seeking wider experience, Mallory left Jamaica after a two-year initiation and journeyed to New York from where he began working the cruise ship circuit with Jamaican singer Alston Bair. The home bug bit in 1980 and Mallory returned to Jamaica and joined the Caribs Band at the Jonkanoo Lounge. Not content to accompany the various artists of the day, he ventured unto front stage himself, and did a successful stint as a Cabaret artist performing to both local and international audiences. During this time, Mallory opened up for international superstars Nancy Wilson and Lou Rawls. The success of these events and rising popularity beckoned him into the recording arena. His first single covered the Paragons' hitMemories by the Score. His next two records signaled further development as a composer. Mallory's Reggae Gone Grammy and Irie Daughter both entered the top ten chards in a short time, but it was the classic ode to dancehall, She Boom which not only became number one on the charts, but also became the first music video which portrayed dancehall dancers and blazed a new trail for other vides showcasing the dancehall movement. "She Boom" was subsequently covered in French by "Kulcha Konnection" and rose to #1 on the French music charts. Still in pursuit of a wider experience, Mallory changed from solo artist to principal keyboard accompanist to a wide cross section of the most outstanding and accomplished reggae artists recognized worldwide. They included Jimmy Cliff, with whom he recorded Cliff's gold album. The Power and Glory and Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers with whom he toured and played on several albums including the Grammy Award winning Fallen is Babylon. As keyboard player with the all-star backing band Lloyd Parkes and We the People, he accompanied other artists such as Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Ken Boothe and John Holt. Mallory's CD, Dance Reggae-Cha-Cha is a remake of his father's instrumental classic hit Arawak-Cha-Cha to which he added lyrics and recorded it in English, Spanish and Portuguese.DANCEHALL DEEJAY DADDY SCREWDaddy Screw, is a Jamaican dancehall deejay best known for his work in the 80’s and 90’s. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Daddy Screw began to deejay while still a student at Vauxhall Comprehensive High School. He released his first single Dimbo Bucket in 1984. Recorded Madda Mampie for Tuff Gong Records producer Tony Kelly, and met brother Dave Kelly of Mad House records fame that produced several Jamaican hit singles. Daddy Screw has also worked with Bobby Digital, and Digital B records, VP Records, and has recorded with Terror Fabulous, Louie Culture, Sanchez, Maxi Priest, and Barrington Levy.M.C. Filled with top notch vintage reggae spun by the DVRS deejays.GANJA ZULULong ago and long ago, Ganja Zulu had his fun in the burning sun. His vibes come right out of Kingston 11. Aka Chris Irie, some say he is the illegitimate son of U-Roy because of his old-school DJ flavor. Daddy U-Roy the Father influenced Ranking Trevor, U-Brown, Ranking Joe, and Brigadier Jerry, then the torch was handed to Ganja Zulu to keep the Waterhouse style alive. He is one of Denver's hottest reggae artists, landing in the Mile High City in the early 1990s. He was here training for the Kung Fu Heavyweight Full-Contact Championship in Seoul, Korea. After winning the World Championship, he was hired by the Denver Broncos to help train them to reach the Super Bowl.Ganja Zulu has three faces: 1) International reggae artist signed to Perris Records with hardcore/reggae band, Platoon 13, which toured throughout the U.S., Montreal, Argentina, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore and was compared by many to Bad Brains and Skin Dread; 2) Star of five kung fu action films, including My Samurai, Tiger Street, and Little Bear and the Master to name a few (he is always the ruthless bad boy with the big fight scene at the end) 3) International martial arts trainer at Rocky Mountain Movement in Englewood, CO (plus another location in Silicon Valley-San Jose, CA). He is co-founder of, “So What! The Club,” one of Denver’s longest running club nights, which currently throws monthly and one-off dance parties around Denver.
