In the endurance performance "Viewing Hours," brooks buries their body under dirt, compost, and decaying flowers, honoring the legendary Black queer trans activist Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson, who they have been writing letters to for three years. The weight of history, the weight of Johnson’s body that was found in the Hudson River, and Johnson’s enchantment with flowers inform this body of work. The full expression of "Viewing Hours" will be performed as part of "Letters To Marsha," which is an experimental dance performance premiering at JACK from January 30 to February 1, 2020. "Viewing Hours" and "Letters To Marsha" together are a diptych, performance gesture that challenge the currency and flippancy that makes black death and black grief profitable. "Viewing Hours" asks, "Can I get a witness?" as a call to action, calling human and nonhuman ancestors to the table.
