Welcome to a unique and immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello. The Madame presents a rotating cast of poets, each operating within a carefully crafted character, who impart their work in public readings, spontaneous eruptions of poetry, and most distinctly, as purveyors of private poetry readings on beds, chaise lounges and in private rooms. For a small fee, all of the poets are available for these sequestered readings at any time during the event. Of course, any true bordello need a good cover; ours is an immersive cabaret featuring burlesque, live music, vaudeville, aerials, visual art, magic, mysticism, with newly integrated themes, performances and installations at each event.According to the great Oscar Wilde, "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." That couldn't be more true at The Poetry Brothel on our Masquerade Tour, where we promise to bring you more truth, beauty, hilarity, and intimacy than ever before. We're bringing back one of our favorites, esteemed guest poet Jerome Rothenberg, along with burlesque artists Eva Mae Garnet & Lilly Holiday, house band Gypsy Groove, palm reader and jewelry maker Holy Crow, a slew of poetry whores, and, of course, your hosts, The Madame, Mister Charley, and Tennessee Pink. This will surely be a celebration for the ages--bigger, better, truer, and weirder than ever! This event will take place in the Mississippi Ballroom. Doors open at 8pm; show starts at 8:30pm. Themed costumes and/or evening wear are encouraged but not required. This event is 21+.
