Community | Culture | Freedom
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It specifically celebrates the state of Texas announcing the abolishment of slavery in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863. But Juneteenth offers a time to come together and celebrate the rich cultural history of African Americans.
Eastlake Park, now Eastlake Park Community Center, opened in 1914 and provided a gathering spot for local African American residents when Phoenix was segregated. Eastlake Park has been the focal point of African American history in Phoenix for much of its existence. Until it outgrew the space, the park was the home of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. The park has been home to many civil rights rallies, visits from civil right leaders and the starting point of all civil rights marches to the Capital. It is home to the Annual Juneteenth Celebration and the Phoenix Arts Commission Civil Rights Memorial.
In the past, JUNETEENTH has drawn crowds of over 4,500 attendees.
We hope you're able to join us!
